Theatre trips and workshops offered to different year groups. S1 and S2 reading groups meet in the library on a weekly basis. Study support is offered by class teachers at lunchtimes and after school.
The English department expects all pupils to do regular homework in keeping with the following guidelines.
S1 - A minimum of 30 minutes of personal reading per week. Once a pupil has finished the text, s/he should sit an Accelerated Reader quiz to demonstrate reading comprehension; the class teacher may give more specific reading targets and deadlines as appropriate. Additional homework related to work done in class may also be issued.
S2/3/4 Standard Grade - Pupils are expected to keep up with personal reading, as this is invaluable preparation for the Standard Grade reading examination. Pupils may also be asked to prepare a solo talk in order to present it to the class during lesson time. Re-drafting essays for SQA folios would also be considered as meaningful homework. Regular practice of past paper questions would also be useful revision for class assessment and the final exam. Additional homework related to work done in class may also be issued.
S5/6 Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Higher - At this level, homework is an essential component of the course and must be completed in order to succeed in the exam. Such tasks may include: reading and preparation for the Personal Study; research, preparation and drafting discursive/reflective essay; reading class texts; critical essay writing; organising and updating class notes; and past paper practice as preparation for NAB assessments, the Prelim and the final exam.
