Geography Department

Geography is the study of people and places. It should help pupils to understand the link between people and their environment and to understand and appreciate the geographical influences that shape nations and cultures. It should also provide pupils with an accurate knowledge and understanding of other people and how they live and it is the basis of good citizenship.

S1 –Earthquakes and Volcanoes - the causes, effects and measures taken to deal with them; Mapping skills; Cold lands and global issues

S2/3 Standard Grade – Population; International Issues; World Climate regions; Settlement; Industry; Farming; Landscapes; Weather

S4/5/6 Intermediate – Physical Environments; Human Environments; Environmental Interactions – chose from River Basin Management, Environmental Hazards, Rural land Resources and Development and Health

S4/5/6 Higher – Physical Core – Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere

Human Core – Urban, Industry, Population, Rural

Environmental Interactions – chosen from River Basin Management,

Rural Land Resources, European Regional Inequalities and Development and Health

S5/6 Advanced Higher – Geographical Methods and Techniques, Folio consisting of a Geographical Study and a Geographical Issue

Homework

In S1 pupils will receive homework regularly, including doing an individual investigation during the Earthquakes and Volcanoes unit

All other pupils will receive weekly homework – this may be written or some form of revision.

Extra Curricular Activities

All pupils are encouraged to come into the department at lunchtimes to work or for help. At particular times we run Revision classes. Occasionally pupils will be out of class to do fieldwork.

Department News

We are running a trip to Sicily in June 2009 where we will visit Mt Etna, do a walk through Alcantara Gorges. a day at Aqua Paradise water park and a boat trip from Milazzo around Isola di Volcano.
