Courses in Home Economics

S1 FCT   Food units and a fabric unit are studied. In S1 we try to give all our new pupils a positive experience by teaching them to be confident about working in a new environment.

S2/S3   Standard Grade Home Economics gives pupils the opportunity to learn important concepts concerning food, from healthy eating principles to food preparation skills.

S2/S3  Intermediate 1 Hospitality.  The emphasis is on practical cookery and pupils are given the opportunity to learn skills concerning food preparation, cookery processes, organisation and management of tasks and safe working practices.

S4-S6 Higher Health and Food Technology. This course is a very intensive course in Food Technology.  It is recognised as a science subject for degree courses in Further Education.

S4-S6 Intermediate 2 Hospitality.  The course in practical cookery is designed to offer development of practical skills.  The course gives pupils an understanding of appropriate food preparation techniques and may well be a stepping stone to a career in food.

S4-S6 Fashion and Textile Technology Intermediate 1  This is a one year course consisting of 3 units with the opportunity to achieve one additional unit.  The assessments for each unit is a practical exercise.

1.  Practical Fabric Skills - Pupils use a commercial pattern and develop sewing techniques to manufacture a textile item.

2.  Design and Make - Pupils design and manufacture a textile item carried out in accordance with a design specification.

 3.  Developing Craft Skills - Pupils use specialist equipment, quick sewing techniques and apply creative craft skills to introduce originality to an item.

Fashion and Clothing Industry.  This additional unit introduces pupils to the role of the fashion designer and stages of garment construction and gives the opportunity to work as a team member to produce a textile item.

At the end of these units pupils sit a practical exam which will determine their overall grade.

S4 - S6 Fashion and Textiles  We hope to offer this new course for 2008/2009.
