We aim to stimulate interest and enjoyment in PE for all pupils, while promoting the role of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle. Pupils will experience a range of sports and will be challenged not only to improve practical abilities but be encouraged to develop personal, social and decision making skills.
All pupils follow a generic course based around the 5-14 curriculum. Including activities such as hockey, rugby, basketball, football, gymnastics and fitness.
All pupils undertake 1 period of core PE and are offered a range of traditional and more diverse activities.
Pupils who elect to study SGPE participate and are assessed in 7 practical activities; athletics, badminton, basketball, fitness, football, gymnastics and hockey. In addition to this they spend 1 period a week in the classroom on the Knowledge and Understanding and Evaluating aspects of the course.
These courses offer pupils the opportunity to further develop and refine their practical ability and also learn to analyse performance and understand the principles behind Physical Education. The course is broken down into the following units
Preparation of the Body - Hockey/Football
Skills and Techniques - Badminton
Structures and Strategies - Basketball
PE facilities in the school consist of a 4 court games hall, 2 gym halls and a suitably equipped fitness suite. These are complimented outside with several grass pitches and a full size astroturf pitch.
A tremendous range of extra curricular activities are provided at Ross, with the provision for extra curricular managed by Sports Coordinator Mark Urwin and supported by the PE Department and many other school staff. Traditional fixture lists are in place for rugby, hockey and football in addition to opportunities activities such as dance, jujitsu and archery! In line with school policy, homework is issued regularly to supplement work done in class.
